The Niecy Daniel Story
Niecy was the middle child of 14 children. She was a frail baby having been born with a heart murmur, scoliosis, and legs so bowed that the doctors recommended that they be broken to straighten them. Her father had only a fourth grade education and her mother worked in a factory mill.
Life dealt Niecy’s family a gut wrenching blow when she was in the 6th grade which led to the family being homeless and her mother being a single parent.
Niecy became pregnant in the eleventh grade with her daughter yet she ranked 11th in a class of 1100 plus students.
Despite the cards being stacked against her, Niecy attended and blossomed in college, graduating 3rd in her class while working at Burger King earning $3.21 per hour.
As fate would have it, Niecy met a fellow during college, at Burger King, whom she fell in love with, had a son with and later married only to discover that he was abusive.
Niecy’s first incident of abuse was when she returned to their box cart apartment after class one swelting hot summer afternoon and he walked down their two second hallway towards Niecy and literally began choking the life out of her.
Another incident of abuse occurred when he showed up at Niecy’s job and demanded that she get into his employer’s company truck. Fear grappled Niecy’s body and she could feel the tears sitting at the rims of her eyelids but she got into the truck so that she could maintain some dignity of not being beaten in the street. He drove down the freeway, which Niecy pictured it like a prisoner taking his or her last walk on death row, when suddenly Niecy escaped by jumping out of the truck on an exit ramp, in three-inch stiletto high heels, where a lady picked her up and drove her to the sheriff’s office. He was arrested.
Niecy went home to get some clothes for a few days and was afraid and hesitant to go into their house. She slowly climbed the stairs, walked into their bedroom and discovered that all of her things were gone. Niecy was puzzled and went downstairs into the garage and there were 21 thirty-two gallons trash bags full of her stuff. Distraught and confused, Niecy went for help and sought refuge with a former neighbor who was like a mother to her only to find out that she had been calling Niecy’s ex-husband and telling him lies which allowed the abuse to continue.
Because of his abusive behavior, Niecy suffered from severe depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, insomnia and extreme nausea due to nervousness. Niecy was broken and wondered what people would think of her being that her own husband thought her worthy of nothing more than maltreatment.
This went on for 23 years until one day Niecy recognized that she had blinders on. When Niecy decided to take off her old glasses and put on new ones, she could see her ex-husband for who he really was. He was an abuser. Niecy’s abuser.
Today Niecy is dedicated to helping others take off their blinders and recognize their abuser or thorn in their side for who he or she really is. Trauma, hardship or disappointment is not limited only to domestic relationships. It can be job related, a medical condition, school, family dynamics, sexual identity or violence, incarceration and other situations.
